What a point-of-sale receipt prints, line by line
A generic POS receipt is deliberately plain: a header with the shop's name, address, and phone; one line per item with its quantity and unit price; a subtotal; a tax line; the grand total; and a tender line naming the payment method. A receipt number and a date-and-time stamp close it so the sale can be found again for a return. Nothing on it is tied to a particular trade, which is what lets the same layout serve a hardware store, a market stall, or a checkout mockup.
Because it is neutral, this template is a common default for developers building a till or kiosk screen and for anyone who needs a believable printout without a shop-specific design. The blocks sit in the order a cashier and a customer both expect: the goods first, then the arithmetic that explains the amount owed.
58mm or 80mm — match the width your printer uses
Thermal receipt printers come in two common paper widths, and the width decides how much fits on a line. A 58mm roll — about 2.25 inches — prints roughly 32 characters per line, which suits a compact receipt with short item names. An 80mm roll — about 3.15 inches — gives around 48 characters per line, enough room for longer descriptions and a wider price column. This template defaults to the narrow 58mm width for the classic compact look, and you can switch it in the builder.
Most of these printers speak ESC/POS, the widely supported command language that tells the hardware where to break lines and how to style text. You do not have to touch any of that here — the preview renders the receipt at the chosen width, so what you see matches what a thermal printer would produce. Knowing the width your target device uses simply helps you pick the layout that will not wrap awkwardly.
The tax line on a POS receipt
Sales tax sits on its own line rather than being baked into shelf prices, so the total reconciles against the items above it. Rates are set locally and combine a state figure with county or city additions. The sample on this template uses a 6.0% rate — Virginia's 4.3% state rate plus a 1.0% local addition for the Richmond example in the header — and across Virginia the combined rate can reach as high as 8% depending on the locality.
If you are generating a receipt for a different place, change the rate and the preview recomputes the tax and total instantly. Keeping tax separate is also what most jurisdictions expect on a printed receipt, so the neutral layout already puts it where an auditor or a customer would look.
A generic layout that fits any shop
The point of a generic POS template is that it commits to no brand. There is no company logo baked in, no trade-specific wording, and no imitation of a particular chain's receipt design. That makes it the safe starting point when you need a realistic printout but do not want — or are not allowed — to reproduce a real store's proprietary look.
You supply the business name, address, items, and payment details, and the receipt forms around them. Where a retail or restaurant template leans into the conventions of that trade, this one stays deliberately plain, which is exactly why it works as test data and as a base you can adapt to almost any counter.
POS receipt versus a full invoice
A POS receipt records a completed, paid sale at the counter: it is proof the money changed hands, printed on the spot. An invoice is a different document — a request for payment issued before settlement, carrying a due date, payment terms, and an invoice number to quote. If your scenario involves billing a customer to pay later, an invoice template is the right choice, not this one.
