What Does a Home Depot Receipt Look Like?
A Home Depot receipt tends to run long, because home improvement baskets run long. Each line names the material, the quantity and the price, and the bulk goods carry a unit of measure with them. Framing lumber is priced by the linear foot, cable comes off a reel by the foot, gravel and concrete are weighed, and fasteners are sold by the box with a count beside them.
Above the item list sits the transaction detail: the store location and number, the date and time, and the register the sale went through. Below it comes the subtotal, sales tax at the local rate, the grand total, and a payment line showing the method and the last four digits of a card. A note about the return window usually prints near the bottom, and that is the part people go hunting for months later.
Two things show up on a Home Depot slip that ordinary retail receipts skip. Services bought alongside the goods get their own charges, so lumber cutting, paint tinting and delivery each appear as a line. And on a trade account the receipt can carry a job name or PO reference.

How to Look Up an Old Home Depot Receipt
Try the store first, because the real document beats a reconstruction every time. Home Depot can often retrieve a past purchase from the card you paid with, and the customer service desk is the quickest route: bring the card, a rough date and the store you shopped at. The lookup window is limited, and it is shorter for an ordinary debit card than for a Home Depot store card or a Pro Xtra account, so ask rather than assume. Cash purchases usually cannot be traced this way at all.
If you ordered online or signed in at the register, the receipt may already be sitting in your account. Order history on homedepot.com holds online purchases, and Pro Xtra attaches in-store purchases to the account where they can be searched by job. Search your email as well, since anyone who gave an address at checkout has a copy filed there.
When none of that turns anything up, you are rebuilding the record from a bank statement. That is a bookkeeping task, and a generic receipt you write yourself is a reasonable place to hold the detail: date, store, amount, and what the money went on. It is not a substitute for the store's own document and should never be presented as one.
Using a Home Depot Receipt for a Job Cost Record
Contractors buy for several jobs at once, so a stack of Home Depot receipts with no job reference is close to useless a month later. A job name, a PO number or a client account written into a header row fixes it. The receipt now belongs to a project, and it can be billed, allocated or deducted without anyone reconstructing it from memory.
Homeowners get the same benefit at a smaller scale. Keeping the deck receipts apart from the bathroom receipts is what lets you say what each part of the work cost, and it matters again at resale, where a capital improvement can adjust your cost basis.
For tax the itemized copy is the one that counts. A card statement shows that $412.86 went to Home Depot. It does not show that $340 of that was lumber for a rental property and the rest was personal. Keep the item lines and the split holds up.
Home Depot vs Lowe's Receipt Format
The two chains sell into the same trade and their receipts carry much the same information. Store and register detail at the top, an itemized materials list in the middle, then tax, total and a payment line. Both print a return window, and both can attach a purchase to a trade or loyalty account when you are signed in at the register.
The real differences sit in the account layer rather than on the paper. Home Depot has Pro Xtra, Lowe's has MyLowe's and its pro accounts, and each keeps purchase history with its own rules for how far back a desk will search a card purchase. If a job spanned both stores, keep the itemization consistent so the two stacks add up together.

Is It Legal to Make a Home Depot Receipt?
Writing down a purchase you actually made is bookkeeping, and it is legal. People do it constantly: rebuilding a lost slip for an expense claim, documenting materials for a client, putting together an insurance file after a renovation. None of that changes because the document was typed instead of printed at a till.
Inventing a transaction is a different thing entirely. A receipt for materials you never bought, used to pull money back from an employer, an insurer or the store itself, is fraud, and it stays fraud whether it was handwritten or generated.
