A medical invoice is a document a healthcare provider issues to a patient to bill for the care delivered. It lists each consultation, procedure or supply with its fee and date of service, then totals the amount the patient is responsible for.
Because care is often made up of several distinct items, the invoice benefits from clear itemisation. Patients, and any insurer they deal with, can see exactly what was provided and charged rather than a single lump sum.
When you need one
A practice issues a medical invoice after appointments where the patient pays directly, or where they need documentation to claim reimbursement from an insurer or an employer. It formalises the charge and gives the patient a record to keep.
